I have heard that in order to use the Proxmark3 for thefirst time you must flash it using the JTAG pins on the board. Am I supposed to connect these pins to the USB or COM port on my PC, and if so, how am I to do that? I have phoned a local electronics store and they say that no such cables are available by retail locally. If I need one of these cables, where do I get one?

I don't know where you got your information from but it is wrong.
Could you tell us where you got that information from?
It is recommended (not necessary) that you upgrade your PM3 to keep up to date with the latest changes. You can upgrade the Proxmark over USB or using a J-TAG programmer. USB is the easiest but if it does not work you might need to get your hands on a J-TAG programmer to make the PM3 usable again.
The documentation (available here) is out of date but should tell you everything you need to know.

I got the information from these discussion groups, but I might have misinterpreted what I read. At present I am writing from a location other than where my PM3 is so it will take me some time to determine whether I can flash the device. I will get back to you when I have had a chance to try to do this. In the meantime, thanks for your help.

OK, I have been safely reunited with my Proxmark3. Can you flash and use the device with Windows XP? Or is it just too much trouble, and should I "upgrade" (!!) to Windows 7? How can I flash the PM3 with Win XP, if this is possible?

It is probably easier using Windows XP to flash the PM3.
Please read the documentation: https://code.google.com/p/proxmark3/downloads/list

I downloaded and looked at the PDF manual (on getting started with the PM3 using Windows XP) that you referred to in your most recent post. I connected the PM3 to my laptop PC (with the PC turned off) and connected the LF antenna to my PM3. I turned on the PC and during the PC's bootup process, the "preflight check" on the PM3 occurred, that is, the LEDs flashed briefly and then went out. I downloaded and installed 7zip and TortoiseSVN. Also I downloaded and extracted ProxSpace-2010226-r390.7z, using WinRAR and not 7zip. However, I cannot preceed to the next step, whcih is to download the Proxmark drivers (ProxSpace-Driver-Current.7z) from http://code.google.com/p/proxmark3/downloads/list. I did a google search for this file and couldn't find it that way either. Where is this file, or a suitable substitute? If this file is unavailable, what do I do next?

'Proxmark-Driver-2012-01-15.7z' should work.
